Fill the tank with water and about 1/2 cup of softener for every 10 gallons of water; let it stand
It may take a few days or just a few hours; you may have to use some elbow grease
If it works; rinse the tank well and then fill with hot water and a cup of baking soda; let it sit for at least 24 hrs; repeat. This assures all of the residue left behind from the softener is removed
Next; let it air dry for a few days before using. It helps if you can place it in the sun
