No, a bottle of wine. That will take care of all that moxy. After a full bottle, you won’t care what color your hair is
VenusKeymasterIf you’re talking to me, it was cleaning the bowl, and moving the fish. I had no idea what I was doing, and they were so tiny; half an inch if that. It was a beautiful bowl; antique and held one quart. I cleaned it every day to keep it pretty. lol When I was a kid, we had an aquarium with six goldfish in it. My really mean sister cleaned it once a week; they were her fish. One day she dropped a fish on the floor and it flopped under the fridge. She couldn’t get it out. That night when we were tucked in bed, she whispered to me, “hey Brenda, ya know where that fish is?” “Where,” I said. “I put it in your bed.” That’s what started my fish nightmares I have no doubt, and could be one of the reasons I’m so passionate about goldfish, due to her lack of caring
VenusKeymasterI’m going to start keeping a barometer reading journal here, and then describe my fish’s behavior
March 6/16 Barometer: 30.14 inHg. steady Fish are somewhat lazy today, feeding for about an hour, and then resting until the next feeding. This seems to be the norm these days, but keep in mind, my fish are in a stock tank and can’t see me. Fish in an aquarium, much like dogs and cats get excited when we go to the kitchen, just like our fish behind glass may get excited and stir when you walk close to the tank
VenusKeymasterMaybe we should start a photo gallery section. I’ll check into it. Some of the best fish photos on the net have come from our own members, and yours are at the top of list. I mean come on…..that one of Hip or Po of the tail fin that looks like the flower? Unbelievable. Who wouldn’t want that swimming in their aquarium
VenusKeymasterYou have moxy :good:
VenusKeymasterYears ago, I worked at a distinqished country club, and one of the gals there suggested I dye my hair. It was 35 to 40% gray at the time. For the longest time I resisted, but finally I caved, and went a reddish brown. It was beautiful alright, but not on me. I haven’t dyed my hair since. I started going gray at the age of 25, or noticed it then. It seems like my natural hair color to me. Besides, my hair is silver, not gray B-)
Tell me what you want your sig to be and I’ll fix it for you
VenusKeymasterWell, you’re a brute for punishment. You see, I’ve learned. I’m well under stocked, and I love it. :yahoo: Spike seems to be getting back to normal so I’m gradually raising the water table. After moving it was super low. I think it made the common nervous. She’s really getting big. NO sign of spawning. I don’t think my fancy boys can catch her if she did spawn
I got a big kick at the thought of Pan peering in through the holes. He’s in love isn’t he? Yes, I think it’s a great idea to give her a break from the action. My females from my old school were a comet and a shu, both built to take it, but Hip…her needs some quiet time. I would love to see a video of the action
VenusKeymasterI deleted the reread, but you can go to your profile and add any signature you like…if you like or leave it blank
VenusKeymasterThat’s weird. The reread comment is in your signature section. I’ll check it out
Ah…I’ve paid as much as $75 for a hair cut, and that was close to thirty years ago. It was really no better than a cheap cut, and no one could do it the way I wanted it done. I once asked a woman to feather the sides, and when I looked in the mirror, the sides were blunt cut. Wonderful I told her. LOL
I cut my own hair now. I have a trim comb, but mostly use hair cutting scissors or pinking sheers, whichever I can find first. If I can’t find one or the other, I look for the break knife. Whatever works; right?
VenusKeymasterI’m not a big fan of Wikipedia. First of all, I hate reading a paragraph loaded with links that light up as you read; drives me crazy; no can read
VenusKeymasterI did reread this over and over again, and finally, I got it 😉
VenusKeymasterWhat we would do differently. That’s a good one. Having been through this countless times, I can tell you in most every case the outcome would be the same. No matter how beneficial our remedies are; they’re powers are limited. Even if you had taken Po to a vet that specializes in fish, there’s a good chance the doctor’s efforts would be in vain. Even today the doctors are treating the symptoms of many conditions without a means to cure
Our best means of treating our fish is using that old ounce of prevention, and we’re doing just that
If some day we can get to the point where the fish we have we’ve bred and raised, that ounce would go a lot farther. We know that most fish being sold online or in pet shops are medicated, salted and fed hormones. This gives us a rough start, and so do the breeds we invest in
The fish we ogle over the most are flawed genetically purposefully by the breeders, and yet we are disappointed when their lives are short. I don’t think Mother nature intended for goldfish to have giant bug eyes, making for poor vision. She didn’t intend on their bodies to be shortened by half a normal body length, making for poor digestion. The very traits that she gave them by design in order for their species to be successful, man screws it up so the fish not only can’t survive in the wild, but has a very short life span in captivity
Even though I don’t advocate messing with genetics to change a breed for the worse, the cold hard fact is, most goldfish, no matter what the breed, will die within a few months after purchase due to ignorance, so I’m not going to worry over their genetics, and neither should you. I just wanted you to know, blame the industry, not yourself. We can’t change it, but if we can become a part of it, and make a difference
VenusKeymasterLOL One of our admin has quite a collection; if she’s still keeping them. Every time she turns around she finds a goldfish tooth in her dirty water tub. Can you believe it? Somewhere around here is a photo of one of her fish’s tooth. I knew they had teeth, but I didn’t realize they came out and grew back, much like shark teeth
To keep my grandsons dirty hands out of my tank, I told em about the teeth LOL
VenusKeymasterGood to know about the internal ears. It makes sense though. External ears aren’t designed for creatures that come from a water world. Agreed, I love it when my fish respond to voice. Funny thing is, the cats come running too lol
VenusKeymasterBy the way, even though fish don’t have ears to hear, my fish are extremely sensitive to the vibrations of sound. My fish come when I call them, even if they’re sleeping in the drain tile, and can’t see me. Let me know what you think after reading the article
VenusKeymasterOf course. I knew that (cough cough) It makes perfect sense, and I think you’re on to something. I’m excited to hear someone refer to the lateral line. Most everyone says the swim bladder organ is sensitive to vibration, but when I lost my old school due to some blasting by a scrap metal company down the road, none of them had swimming issues, but one by one the lateral lines were injured; some more severe than others, but the injuries lead to their death. Since then, I’ve been fascinated by the lateral line and it’s function, which is extensive
I found a few articles; one too complex for the average person to understand, but this page says it in plain English Trails.com
Read it, if you want some confirmation on your theory
So, I’m going to start watching the weather and listen up for the report. I have a thermostat for outdoor and indoor temps, but no barometric pressure readings. I’ve seen them though. Let’s keep a little log here. Maybe we can match up our fish’s behavior according to these readings….very cool B-)
VenusKeymasterYour question is fascinating. I’ve never given it any thought whatsoever. I was thinking the shorter days, the colder tank water led to the quietness of the fish in winter. Although it’s true we keep our indoor tanks warm, my tank water was difficult to keep warm in the winter in the old house, but I’ve recently moved, and even though the room is well insulated and the water temps are consistently at warmer temps; still no spawning, and very little activity. I live in Missouri, which of course is the midwest, so I’m not sure of the variances of the barometer. To be quite honest, now that you mention it, what the heck is a barometric reading anyway? Did I say that right? LOL
VenusKeymasterYou should only see spawning with a three to four degree rise in temps, and my guess is, your temps are somewhat stable, but now you know. When you’re ready to start frying, so are your fish :yahoo:
VenusKeymasterA sad day indeed when you lost Po
I know Po was really special to you, and it hurt to loose him. Don’t beat yourself up about. Next to me (cough cough) your the best goldfish keeper I know. Po was a very lucky fish to have lived in excellent water and have such a great diet to boot. You did right by him
VenusKeymasterOkay that’s just weird….both posts are now here lol
