Goldfish loosing color

Hi everyone, Hope you all are well. It’s been a few weeks since I dropped in. One of my bug eyed goldfish was pure black. Over the past few months it’s loosing color and turning golden color. Is this normal? I think the name of the breed is fantail. The other one just like it doesn’t seem to be changing. Do you think one could be a female and one a male? I hope so. Maybe I’ll get lucky

It’s not unusual for one eye to be larger than another, but keep a close watch on it. If it was swelling due to low oxygen in the water previously, it should stop now that the water issue has improved. There’s nothing we can do for this type of issue anyway, except give them the best care, and then hope for the best

Even the best fish keepers lose fish. I think most fish keepers feel a great deal of guilt over the loss, but it’s wasted emotion that’s best spent by learning more about the hobby

It’s a great feeling when you know what you’re doing. It doesn’t mean everything will always go well, but at least you have some control over things

Thanks for letting me know. I tell everyone they’re fantails, and no one has ever said different. I had a feeling they might be delicate. I may be wrong, but it seems to me one of the fish has one eye larger than the other. I don’t remember it being like this when I first brought it home.

Sorry for your loss Venus. It’s hard to imagine you losing a fish for any reason, but accidents happen. I know it’s horrible having to move, and moving fish is really hard work. I was heart broken when I lost my old fish. They just died one by one, and I knew it was something I was doing wrong, but I just couldn’t figure out what it was. I feel more confident now that the fish are happy. I’ve read the Ten Steps to Goldfish Keeping through and through. I’m following each step to the letter now.

    Thanks for being here.

I think your fantail is a Moor. It’s not unusual for black Moors to turn gold or orange as they mature, although this disappoints a lot of fish keepers. Some keep their coloration for life

Moors are delicate fish because of their eyes. I’m glad we got your water issue fixed, because the eyes swell when the water quality is bad. I lost a Moor this way a few years back. I moved, and was so tired I forgot to test the water, which was filtered. The lack of KH value meant the water wasn’t supporting oxygen. The next morning all of the fish were at the surface, gasping. The Moor died a few days later

No matter the color, all that matters is the health

How cool would it be if we could tell the sex of a goldfish by its color? Unfortunately, this isn’t the case, but this doesn’t mean one isn’t a female and one a male. You could get lucky after all
