No filter No pump leads to no oxygen in the water, or does it?
No filter no pump leads to no oxygen in the water. We love our pond pumps around here, and never miss an opportunity to talk them up. A real pond pumps pulls water from the very bottom of the tank, and then pushes it to the surface in a powerful jet stream. During this process carbon dioxide (gas created from waste) is eliminated from the water. Co2 fills tank water, keeping oxygen from entering, consequently lowering pH
A real pond pump, or no pump at all
At some time or another every goldfish keeper finds themselves with no pond pump. There are those with their fish in a bowl unknowingly, and us old fish keepers with old pumps that break down; we can also end up in a bind. Some of you are located in regions where pond pumps are hard to find and even harder to afford. What to do?
Does every set up require a pond pump? Absolutely not
Shallow water has the potential to release Co2 if the set up is right, although the surface must be moving
Obtain a large (20 to 30 gallon) square plastic tub from your local department store, however, the tub must have a broad surface compared to the amount of water it holds. The water depth should match the length of your longest fish from nose to base of tail
Follow the stocking levels; 2.5 gallons of water per inch of goldfish body

The deeper the water, the harder it is to eliminate Co2, because it hangs heavily on the bottom close to the waste. Carbon dioxide forces the fish from the bottom closer to the surface. Tall goldfish houses require large pond pumps
Point a fan at the surface of the tub to disturb the water. This action pulls Co2 from water, and then pulls oxygen from the fresh air above as well
Locate the tub in a cool room; 64 to 68f, filled with fresh air, however, do not place the tub in direct sunlight
Whether you have a pump included in your set up or not, you’ll need either a gravel or rock substrate, so the waste has a place to settle
No filter no pump? No worries
The water is quiet in the fish house above due to a downed pump, however, the large stock tank provides a large surface area. A fan will move the surface, helping to release Co2 from the water’s depth. The pitcher method of removing carbon dioxide was also used during the event. Push a pitcher deep into the water filling it. Bring it up, and pour it back in. Repeat this action several times. Test pH frequently to make sure oxygen levels are healthy
