Goldfish dropsy caused by organ failure
Goldfish dropsy caused by organ failure. Symptoms are bloating. When you see a bloated goldfish or Koi it’s a sign of organ failure. Often referred to as dropsy, the kidneys aren’t doing their job, and fluids begin building up in the fish’s tissue. An older fish may be more susceptible to organ failure, it’s body slowly, winding down with age. A young fish however, should have strong healthy organs
We’re seeing more and more of goldfish dropsy these days
Goldfish dropsy causes floating or sinking issues. As the body swells, so does the intestinal tract, closing off the tube leading to the swim bladder. Gas may be trapped in the bladder causing the fish to float aimlessly, however, gas may not be able to access the bladder due to swelling. The swim bladder organ uses gas created by waste in the tract, giving the fish the ability to sink or rise at will
Bloated Goldfish
It’s unfortunate, but the industry pushes salts, medications and chemicals on us like it was a way of life, and for goldfish keepers it is. The breeders rely on salt and medications to control disease and infection. This is the first insult to the fish. A little salt is healthy for goldfish, however, if KH levels are on the high side of the comfort zone, saline content in the water should be just enough to keep the water free of disease
Koi Dropsy
It’s recommended to keep KH on the high end of the comfort zone. Alkalinity fights disease. Organs affected by disease deteriorate in acidic water. Considered as alkaline or base, the measurement dividing the two is 70 ppm for KH. KH alone is responsible for alkalinity, unlike you’ve been led to believe. Most goldfish keepers ignore the parameter, measuring pH only
Comfort zone for KH is 100 to 140 ppm

Many so called experts recommend the use of salts to prevent infection, but bad bacteria and parasites both quickly build a resistance to the saline. Because the industry doesn’t teach about the cycle or doesn’t offer information on creating a healthy environment, the health of water depends on medication instead of Mother Nature
Bloated Koi
Being freshwater fish, their organs cannot tolerate constant saline solutions. Medications used to destroy bad bacteria are stressful as well. Even the commercial water treatments we use are made of chemicals that can injure our fish. Do not medicate goldfish or Koi with dropsy. Containing harsh chemicals, meds will push the fish over the edge
