Cold Fish

Cold Fish are healthy fish Buy the book Cold fish are healthy fish. Goldfish and Koi are cold blooded, meaning they have no core body temperature. Their body temperature matches that of their environment. Their ancestors, the Gibel carp swam the icy cold rivers of China. These fish thrive in cold water, and we can use this attribute to our advantage. Reducing tank temperatures is a great way of buying time in a crisis; placing the fish into dormancy. Goldfish begin dormancy at 54f and are fully dormant at 45f. You will still see slow gill and body movement, but they will not eat nor are they very responsive. No, the cold does not hurt a cold blooded animal like it would a warm blood one like us Goldfish and Koi both can tolerate warmer temperatures up to 74f, and sometimes a little higher if conditions are right, but this doesn't mean they should be kept in these temperatures. Their immune systems are compromised in warmer water for more than one reason Bad bacteria flourish in warmer water; beneficial bacteria are weakened. With no internal cooling system, goldfish can and will cook in too high of temperatures. You may see them raise their scales in a futile effort to cool their bodies. Some goldfish have been known to leap out of the water in an effort to escape Water temps goldfish A goldfish is a goldfish no matter what breed or variety. No matter how fancy or how common, your goldfish requires colder water to maintain its good health and longevity. A healthy ecosystem for a goldfish also requires heavily oxygenated water. Some aquarium plants are tropical, and should be placed in tropical tanks with tropical temperatures. Placing these types of plants in a goldfish aquarium invites root rot which invites bad bacteria and adds to the bio load, but some plants, such as algae and duck weed, thrive in very same environment as goldfish, requiring cold and heavily oxygenated water. If a tropical plant is thriving in a goldfish aquarium, the goldfish are not Cold fish Bad bacteria and parasites alike become dormant in cold temperatures, becoming more and more active in warmer temps unless of course the water reaches extreme high temperatures closer to the boiling point which destroys them Goldfish can tolerate extremely low temperatures as long as it remains above the freezing point of 33 degrees Fahrenheit. Goldfish survive extreme winters in ponds only when the pond's bottom is below the freeze line; meaning the point of depth in the grade that doesn't freeze in extreme cold weather Because goldfish are cold blooded they become dormant in lower water temperatures. When a goldfish begins to enter dormancy their blood flow decreases, and so does their need for oxygen or food. The colder your tank or pond water, the slower the fish. The warmer the water, the faster the blood is moving, the more oxygen the fish uses. Toxins or bad bacteria are much more dangerous [...]

Fancy Goldfish Breeds

Fancy goldfish breeds are more delicate than common Buy the book Fancy goldfish breeds are still goldfish at heart, but they've been bred for different body styles with various features. It all started with the common goldfish bred from the Gibel carp, and ever since, the breeders have worked hard to create other more exciting varieties Common goldfish The comet goldfish is becoming more common than the common with its extended tail and sleek portions; it races through the water like shooting star; how it got its name. The comet is considered as a common type, but the first goldfish to hold this title with its name is the common goldfish as shown below Contrary to popular belief, the fancy goldfish can be kept with the common goldfish. Although the common fish are faster, the fancy fish are just as determined when it comes to meal time. The faster fish may spend most of its time racing around in excitement, while the fancy waits patiently at the bottom for the food to fall. If you're feeding appropriate amounts and often enough; all of your fish will get more than enough to eat Fancy goldfish have been bred to enhance what may be considered as an abnormality or weakness in the genes, such as bulging eyes like the fish in the photo above or a fat round body or a low flowing tail. In the wild, these fish would not be very successful Goldfish breeds Fancy fish with wens require a little extra attention as they mature. The wen may need trimming because it grows along with the fish; sometimes getting so large the added weight is difficult for the fish to support. Some of these fish with wens; Lionheads and Orandas may have their vision obstructed Whether you choose a fancy or a common goldfish, it will need the same conditions as a common goldfish or even a Koi, cold and heavily oxygenated water; free of toxins Common goldfish Although some of the fancier goldfish need special care and a special environment because of their delicate fins or body shapes, such as pearlscales, the moors, veiltails or bubble eye, most of the other fancy goldfish do very well in tanks or ponds. Learn everything you can about goldfish keeping Centuries ago, and still today, the Chinese displayed their goldfish in glass bowls much to the delight of their guests, but the goldfish were quickly returned to their ponds after the party was over. This could very well have started the ‘goldfish in a bowl’ tradition, and with dire consequences. The water they live in should be filtered and oxygenated. Even a large aquarium is not a natural environment for goldfish. They are more at home in shallow water that has plenty of surface area with plenty of surface activity, such as water fountains and falls. Compromises must be made if these creatures are to be housed successfully in our homes 10 easy steps goldfish keeping Goldfish keeping 10 Easy Steps Goldfish Keeping GOLDFISH House Step 1 House your goldfish in a fancy aquarium, a flower pot or even a rubber tub. The most important factors in choosing a container is that it is large enough, strong enough to hold water and free of contaminants, having more surface area and less depth. Some goldfish are sensitive to water pressure  Minimum stocking level 2.5 gallons of water per 1” of body length If you have an indoor goldfish house, locate it a place that doesn’t receive too much sunlight; a room that stays cool year round. The top should be open and exposed to fresh air Use aquarium safe decorations and natural gravel. Understanding Goldfish and their environment Buy the book Goldfish are delicate creatures Understanding goldfish isn't easy, however, it helps if we Descendants of the Gibel carp swimming upstream in China's icy cold rivers for centuries upon centuries. Goldfish,  bred for it magnificent beauty; its brilliant color and splendid size, developing into a wide range of variations in the species. The Chinese first bred these highly prized goldfish in garden ponds, and often displayed them in glass bowls, but only temporarily to impress their  house guests. Perhaps this is how the tradition of keeping goldfish in bowls got started, but this is also where it should end Fish of a Different Color Their natural environment is a complex ecosystem that must be perfectly balanced, and this is only obtained after a great deal of labor, a great deal of added expense, and sometimes heartbreak too The tiny goldfish being sold in pet shops are called (very young babies) fry; they will double in size within a few short weeks and by the end of their first year they could easily measure 2" even 3" in length. After their first year of growth, they average approximately 1" per year Understanding goldfish If their growth is not interrupted or stunted by close quarters, they will keep growing for most of their life span, which averages 20 years, and some live for much longer, growing much larger. If their growth is stunted, their life span will be shortened What size goldfish aquarium? Although we've been led to believe that goldfish can be kept in bowls; this is not true. Goldfish need space; room to grow. The water they live in should be filtrated and oxygenated. Even a large aquarium is not a natural environment for the goldfish. They are more at home in a shallow pond that has plenty of surface area with plenty of surface activity, such as water fountains and falls. Extreme measures are to be taken if these creatures are to be housed successfully in glass aquariums How to clean Aquarium Use your imagination when considering housing for your goldfish; have fun with it, but be cautious. A large terracotta pot works well and is quite attractive. Wine barrels with plastic liners are fun; the plastic liner is a must if you are to avoid disaster, or you might consider a claw-foot bathtub. If cost is a big issue, consider a rubber or plastic tub. The most important factors in choosing a container is that it is large enough, strong enough to hold water and free of contaminants.  Whether or not your goldfish are in a glass aquarium, a pond, a tank, or a tub, it is mandatory to create as natural of an environment as possible, and this can be accomplished by following 10 Steps to GOLDFISH Koi Keeping The oldest known goldfish was proven to be 53 yrs of age When you first read through the 10 Steps, you may feel overwhelmed, wondering how you got yourself into this, [...]

Goldfish Ponds

By | 2020-08-06T00:52:13-05:00 May 21st, 2018|

Goldfish Ponds make fish keeping easy Buy the book Goldfish ponds are rewarding. Our freshwater friends are much more at home in a shallow pond that has plenty of surface area with plenty of surface activity, such as water fountains and falls. Goldfish average one inch of growth per year. It would take a really big aquarium to house even one mature goldfish, reaching as much as a foot in length. Many people purchase goldfish not realizing their growth potential. Most common goldfish that survive their goldfish keepers end up being released in nearby lakes or ponds The standard stocking level for both fish is 2.5 gallons minimum per inch of body length. Stay at or below this standard to keep a healthy natural balance of the ecosystem. Double the amount of water, and cut the inch in half to cut maintenance in half. The bigger your pond; the lower your stocking levels; the easier it is to maintain The larger the pond, the less maintenance required to keep the water healthy, but just like aquariums and indoor tanks, the stocking levels also dictates how much maintenance will be necessary Goldfish ponds When your goldfish spawn, reduce the amount of food you're feeding. The fish will feed on the eggs and any small fry lucky enough to hatch, controlling their own stocking level. Keep in mind, your fish will never stop growing, and as they age, the size of your pond may need to be increased, or fish re-homed in order to maintain a healthy stocking levels. Exceed the stocking level for too long, and the ecosystem may become unbalanced, leading to an unhealthy environment Common, comets or shubunkins are much better suited to outside ponds than the delicate fancy variety, but even the fancies can fare well in a pond with the proper care Goldfish Breeding Goldfish are cold blooded; meaning they have no core body temperature, so it's important that the depth of your pond is below your regions freeze line. This provides an area that the fish can migrate to in freezing or even warmer weather conditions In some parts of the world it may be advisable to bring your goldfish in during the colder winter months; unless you have a heater for your pond Never chop a hole in a pond that has been frozen over; the vibrations may damage the fish internally by rupturing the swim bladder organ or the central nervous system Keeping goldfish save from predators Most predators interested in goldfish are nocturnal. Our freshwater fish are diurnal, meaning they rest when it's dark. Being bottom dwellers by nature, they should be safe from nocturnal predators. This is one good reason to have an adequate depth in your outdoor pond. A deeper pond not only provides a safe haven from predators, but can also offer cooler water in the summer and warmer water in the winter If water is low in oxygen, the fish are spending time at the surface where they [...]

Feeding Goldfish Koi

By | 2020-08-05T08:38:37-05:00 August 6th, 2017|Categories: Goldfish Koi Maintenance|Tags: , |

Feeding Goldfish Koi is fun for the entire family STEP 10 Buy the Books Feeding goldfish Koi is a little more complicated than sprinkling flakes on the water surface once or twice a day. We should be feeding our fish close to the same way and the same foods they would eat in their natural environment. In the wild, goldfish spend most of their time nibbling and grazing; eating food as they come across it. These foods consist mostly of vegetation, fish eggs and small fish. In the wild, food is scarce Competition is fierce in the wild. Fish eggs, small fry and worms are few and far between. Vegetation makes up for the biggest part of their diet because it's plentiful. Because of these habits, goldfish have evolved with stomachs the size of their eye. We could almost say they don't have stomachs. The food they eat digests very quickly, leaving their system within a few short hours Feeding goldfish Feed less more often 4 to 6 times a day The goldfish swim bladder organ is connected to the intestinal tract where carbon dioxide is exchanged. Co2 is a gas created from waste. This gas exchange allows fish to rise or sink at will. Improper feeding leads to an impacted or slow tract, which can trap the gas in the bladder, leading to floating issues Feed less more often to keep the tract moving  Offer similar types of food found in their natural habitat. There is no fruit or pork; no beef or chicken, and certainly no dairy products, however, you will find an abundance of vegetation Keep smaller fish separate from larger fish. Goldfish will eat anything they can fit in their mouths including their tank mates Goldfish, just like humans need a varied diet because feeding a limited diet of flakes and pellets leads to an impacted tract, contributing to digestive disorders. Choose a food brand that contains less filler, such as ash. Ash consists of low grade seafood parts: scales and bone used as fillers. Feed less flakes and pellets. Flakes and pellets contain additives. Even though these food products provide the nutrition our fish need, with a little extra labor and a little added expense, our fish could be fed a healthy diet with less processed foods Goldfish care Feeding only once or twice a day causes gorging Bottom dwellers by nature, this is where our fish feel safe from predators. Goldfish eyes are located in a position where it's difficult for them to see below, and because of it, feeding at the surface may cause stress. Most new goldfish keepers make the mistake of sprinkling flakes on the surface. Surface feeding causes fish to gulp air which often leads to air bubbles in their pooh or air bubbles being released through their mouth and gills. Taking in air leads to serious issues that can easily be avoided by feeding properly Feeding goldfish Koi Gather the entire amount of food to be fed in hand. Hold food beneath water surface to moisten. Release in a spreading motion over a large area to [...]

Goldfish Koi House

By | 2020-08-07T08:30:33-05:00 August 5th, 2017|Categories: Goldfish Koi Maintenance|Tags: , |

What kind of goldfish house is right for you and your fish? STEP 1 Buy the book Goldfish Koi House can be any container that's clean, appropriately sized and strong enough to hold water. What size goldfish house do your fish need? Goldfish average 16 years living in a healthy environment, however, some live for much longer, growing much larger. Start with a goldfish house adequately sized. Goldfish will easily reach 2" their first year, averaging 1" per year Recommended STOCKING LEVEL 2.5 gallons of water per 1" of body Recommended water minimum DEPTH; body length of largest fish from nose to tail base Koi grow three times as large, requiring three times the space Size fish house appropriately, so that water parameters remain consistent. With proper care and proper housing a common goldfish could easily out live your dog or cat Goldfish Housing There are many styles and sizes of aquariums on the market today, however, keep in mind when choosing a fish house that goldfish require less depth and more surface area. The majority of aquariums are designed for tropical fish; not goldfish Goldfish houses with small surface area compared to the body of water need increased water movement. Depth of water should not be less than the length of the longest fish from nose to tail Suitable tank mates for goldfish Separate the smallest fish from the largest. Goldfish are omnivorous. They will eat anything that fits in their mouth, including other goldfish. The same holds true with Koi. Even though these fish form attachments to other fish, their natural instinct to survive in the wild drives them to nibble at anything and everything. They just can't help themselves Goldfish care Goldfish have been known to jump out of their water. Avoid accidents by lowering the water table. The gap between the surface and the top should match the body length of your longest fish, and yet another reason to have a larger container for your goldfish. Most aquariums come equipped with lids, however, goldfish fare much better in open topped tanks with the water surface exposed to fresh air. If you feel more comfortable with a top consider a screen Goldfish keeping It's fun to play around in your tank or pond. It's hard to resist beautiful decorations, and sometimes we have a tendency to overdo it. Make certain that the decorations you place in your goldfish house are aquarium safe before adding. If quarters are tight make sure that the object is not taking up valuable space the goldfish need. Goldfish are easily injured on sharp objects, especially the fancy varieties. Some materials, such as plastic, metal, fresh concrete or wood will affect the water quality Type plants goldfish aquarium There's a variety of fake plants to choose from, although silk ones are safest. Plastic plants can injure delicate fish. Be prepared to replace plants regularly if you choose real vegetation. Goldfish enjoy nibbling on plants, and some fish are very aggressive with their nibbling. Make sure the plants you place in your aquarium are [...]

Treating goldfish Koi Tumor

By | 2019-04-01T10:28:06-05:00 July 27th, 2017|Categories: Goldfish Koi Health Issues|

Treating goldfish Koi Tumor requires extreme therapy Treating goldfish Koi Tumor requires extreme therapy in most cases. It may be difficult to tell what type of tumor you're dealing with. A simple wart is firm to the touch and has a rough texture. They're simple to eliminate with the Sea Salt and Garlic remedy. Tumors created from SSG are mushy and smooth to the touch, however, if the tumor your fish has is a little different, it may be an actual mass caused by abnormal cell production. These types of tumors may or may not be cancerous, and in most cases, we'll never find out. There are few willing to invest in hundreds of dollars to find out, and possibly thousands to treat a cancerous tumor on a goldfish Some of us may not be able to make a large investment, but we've got to do something, and that's where natural remedies come in. There's no chemical on a pet shop shelf that's going to destroy the tumor and save your fish, but herbs that are proven to destroy abnormal cells may be its only chance Tumors on goldfish and Koi Customized remedy combination (dandy, garlic and aloe juice) Before starting treatment, lower fish house water to 64f by chilling tank water in the fridge. This is going to reduce stress on the fish After you've succeeded in lowering temps, proceed with the following Scoop fish up in a one gallon container of tank water; pour in one ounce from 8 ounce remedy bottle slowly, mixing with your hand as you do so The garlic will help to anesthetize the fish after five minutes or so, but if the fish is still too active to treat, chill the container wand fish in the fridge for 45 minute Between the garlic and the cold water, this will help to reduce activity even more Fill syringe with remedy; inject (as much as possible) in tumor during bath. If you feel the tip of the needle may have gone past the tumor and into the tissue beneath it, even better, as this is more than likely where the tumor started Leave fish in bath and follow instructions below Fill eye dropper with oral remedy. Lift the fish's head above the surface, and it will gasp in a moment, giving you a chance to push the tip into its throat. Squeeze gently until the dropper is empty Release the fish and the bath water back into main tank (that's one ounce of treatment added to the main tank) Allow tank water to warm to 72f Remedy treats 80 gallons total (use one ounce of remedy per 10 gallons of fish house water) Repeat entire process daily until remedy is gone All rights Author: Brenda Rand Learn more about tumors on goldfish and Koi Goldfish Tumors

Stop Killing goldfish

By | 2019-04-01T14:16:49-05:00 February 10th, 2017|Categories: Goldfish Koi Chat|

Stop killing goldfish and stop following pet shop advice Stop killing goldfish. Instead of keeping them in a sterile or chemically induced environment, create a natural ecosystem for your fish. Pet shop clerks sell products. Few are experts on animals, especially goldfish, although they act like it in order to make the sell. If they're confident, you'll be confident in them. The products that line the pet shop shelves hold false promises of curing your fish Most of these products are based on dangerous chemicals that all too often push sick fish over the edge. I have never known one case where these chemically based medications improved the health of a fish Dead goldfish Nine times out of ten, a fish is suffering from water poor in value, poisoning or improper feeding, not disease. Adding pet shop medications to their unhealthy environment worsens the condition of the water and the fish. The same chemicals promised to improve the health of your fish, destroys the ecosystem by killing organic life forms. Fish living in a natural environment depend on a healthy ecosystem for quality of life, and so does the fish living held in captivity Killed goldfish When chemicals are intentionally or unintentionally dumped in our natural water works, the live in it dies or becomes sickened. The same is true of our goldfish. We should never have to use chemicals to maintain the health of our fish house water. With little encouragement, Mother Nature will get the job done Stop killing goldfish A natural environment starts with fast moving water exposed to fresh air; cold water rich in mineral value, set up with real pond pumps, established with a healthy colony of beneficial bacteria. The environment is topped off with a thick layer of algae Newly remodeled to encourage mother nature, in a short time this aquarium will sport a beautiful layer of green algae. Goldfish yawning

By | 2020-08-05T09:32:35-05:00 October 27th, 2016|Categories: Default Category|Tags: |

Goldfish yawning and hanging out at surface Buy the book Goldfish yawning or gasping at surface in an effort to breathe, due to the fact there is little or no oxygen in the tank or pond water. Goldfish take in water through their mouths, and push it out their gills. Oxygen is absorbed from the water as it passes over the rake, an organ located inside the gill. The rake is equivalent to our lungs, providing oxygen to the bloodstream Goldfish deprived of oxygen spend time at the surface, sucking air Goldfish rapid gill movement The higher the goldfish rests in a body of water, the lower the oxygen levels in the water, normally due to the carbon dioxide created by the waste goldfish produce. Co2 hangs heavily on the bottom where waste settles. The greater the levels of Co2 in the water, the less oxygen Goldfish overworking mouth gills Water must be free of gases in order to be oxygenated. A natural body of water has a great deal of surface area; always moving, however slightly. Called method of diffusion' water movement pulls Co2 from the depths as it absorbs oxygen from the air, however, it takes more than action to oxygenate water Goldfish gasping surface Few goldfish keepers understand the needs of their fish nor the water they live in. Goldfish come from the rivers in China, and because of it, they require cold and fast moving water; water rich in oxygen and minerals. All too often, goldfish aquariums are enclosed with filters that hang on the top, although, these types of filters do not oxygenate water. Only a real pond pump creates the necessary action needed to clear a body of water Goldfish yawning Water surface must be exposed to fresh air. The body of water must be free of gases created from waste or pressure found in tap water; free of clouds created from green water algae or bacteria blooms. Only a real pond pump is capable of getting the job done Last, but not least Carbonate mineral (KH) giving water the ability to support oxygen, is a part of pH. The comfort zone is 70 to 120 ppm, however, why settle for less It's not just the fish that need oxygen, but the environment they live in. Goldfish bent

Goldfish bent to one side indicates nitrate poisoning Buy the book Goldfish bent or in a curled position are suffering from nitrate poisoning. Nitrates destroy the blood cells causing extreme pressure and pain. In most cases, the goldfish keeper performs a large water change which worsens the condition. Goldfish in water with high nitrates need deep water, and removing too much at one time reduces the water pressure, increasing the pressure in the body. Even worse, some keepers move the fish into a hospital tank after noticing it's not behavior. These hospital tanks are typically shallow, and low in oxygen due to bubblers or air pumps Goldfish curled sideways Goldfish suffering from nitrate issues require water that is deep and water that is rich in oxygen. In most cases, fish may succumb to nitrate poisoning due to the fact the water is low in oxygen. Getting the blood oxygenated is the key to recovery Goldfish not eating If your goldfish folded over has been poisoned by nitrates, exchange only 5% of tank or pond water every half hour to reduce levels gradually and safely. This method of exchanging water also keeps the water table high Goldfish bent Even the healthiest goldfish need water that is rich in mineral value and oxygen, but if your fish has experienced high nitrates or any level of nitrite, it will need these conditions even more. Don't settle for parameters that are in the comfort zone; reach for the top. Most goldfish keepers are unaware of the conditions that goldfish require; cold and fast moving water Goldfish bent sideways Water is oxygenated by the diffusion method. This is when the surface absorbs oxygen from the air above it. If your aquarium has a top on it, remove it. Install a pond pump in your aquarium. They come in all sizes. No other HOB filter or canister is capable of clearing a body of water. Gases created from waste take up space, keeping oxygen from entering Test pH; made up of oxygen and KH. Comfort zone for KH is 100 to 140 ppm. Buffer KH to high end of the zone for optimum benefit. If pH is still low, water is low in oxygen Goldfish may experience nitrate shock when moved from water high in nitrates to water low in nitrates and vice versa Test for nitrates. Comfort zone is 20 to 40 ppm, but goldfish suffering from nitrate issues past or present may prefer lower levels; 5 to 10 ppm being super sensitive Perform 911 Water Change to reduce nitrate levels Refer to: Learn about nitrates and the dangers Recommend: Mean Green Remedy Back to symptoms and ailments All rights Author: Brenda Rand

Nitrites are the second toxin to form in the nitrogen cycle Goldfish bleeding under scales Medicinal antibiotics are not the solution. Over the counter products are harsh chemicals that destroy the beneficial bacteria responsible for the nitrogen cycle. Use of these chemicals puts the fish at risk of being poisoned by ammonia and nitrite. Pet shop medications also injure the fish's immune system. What we refer to as blood poisoning is actually bad bacteria that has infected the blood stream The fish below has blood poisoning, better know as septicemia Goldfish red blotches The immune system of the blood stream must be boosted in either case to improve the health of the fish, however, the immune system of the ecosystem must be boosted at the same time. Using medicinal antibiotics will push the fish over the edge in either case. Bacteria rapidly builds a resistance to medications Nitrite recovery requires excellent water with natural remedies, such as the sea salt bath to improve gill function and the green tea remedy. Green tea increases the blood flow restricted by nitrites. Cold and heavily oxygenated water is the key to recovery The fish below has been poisoned by nitrites

Tips Keeping Goldfish Cool

By | 2020-08-05T12:18:27-05:00 May 10th, 2016|Categories: Goldfish Koi Chat|

Tips keeping goldfish cool in the summer Being coldblooded and cold water fish, goldfish have little tolerance for warm temperatures. Why do you need to read tips  keeping goldfish cool, because goldfish use more oxygen in warmer water, making it all important to keep up with water changes and maintain a healthy pH balance. Because they use more oxygen, this makes nitrates more dangerous in warm water. Warm water also invites bad bacteria and encourages the reproduction of external parasites Comfort zone of water temperature for goldfish and Koi is 64 to 74 Fahrenheit  No matter how fancy your goldfish, you can bet it prefers cooler temperatures Although lower temperatures are easily tolerated, as the blood flow slows, so does the digestive system. Goldfish can easily survive winter in a pond if the bottom is at or below the freeze line, but only if the water is properly oxygenated Surviving high water temperatures is another story. Unlike warm blooded animals, whose core body temperature is regulated, the body of the goldfish and Koi always match the temperature of the water they're swimming in. When temps rise to dangerously high levels, their bodies can actually cook. This is why it's important to keep their goldfish house water temperature at comfortable levels Symptoms of too warm of water: raised scales Goldfish lift their scales in an effort to reduce the temperature of the body whether caused by fever or warm water How keep goldfish pond cool Here are a few tips for keeping your goldfish cool during the hot summer months 1. Install a water cooler in your aquarium. You can buy them new and used from $100 and up depending on the size you need. If you don't like turning on the A/C this is an affordable way to keep your fish cold while you enjoy the warmth of summer 2. Chill a pitcher of tank or pond water in the fridge; pour all around slowly; refill and repeat as needed. It may take only a few or several throughout the day to keep your fish cool 3. Keep your indoor fish house open so the surface is exposed to fresh air 4. Set up a fan so it blows across the surface, cooling the air over it 5. Float ice cubes (made from tank water) in the tank, but not so much that they cover necessary surface space 6. Freeze smooth stones appropriately sized and place in fish tank 7. Don't place indoor fish houses in front of windows that receive a lot of sun 8. Don't place indoor fish houses in the kitchen or rooms that are warmer than the rest of the house 9. If your pond doesn't get any shade throughout the day, use free floating water plants to shelter the water from the sun, such as lettuce or water hyacinth. The roots filter the water and the fish enjoy hiding within the stands 10. Increase the water movement in your pond or tank water. Faster moving water stays [...]

They want a magic potion to pour in the water, making everything right. The magic potion is in the elbow Healthy fish live in healthy water, and healthy water doesn't come easy in an aquarium or small pond. What goldfish and Koi need is water that is rich in minerals, cold and heavily oxygenated. Goldfish the Real Story easy goldfish cure You may see products at the pet shop that promise to keep your water clear; products that promise to destroy bad bacteria and parasites. You will also see products that promise to raise pH; products that create an instant cycle. Some of these products work, but only temporarily, and most of these products cause more problems in the long run Help cure goldfish The very products that destroy bad bugs also destroy friendly bugs; the bugs that are responsible for creating the nitrogen cycle. After use, the bad bugs are gone, but so are the good. When this happens, ammonia forms, poisoning the fish. Now you might be thinking, but there are products that eliminate ammonia, and it's true, but these products cannot safely convert ammonia levels that continue to rise as the cycle completes Products that raise pH also raise KH. Even though carbonate hardness is a part of pH, so is oxygen. In most cases where pH levels are low, oxygen levels are low, not KH. Too high of carbonate levels can burn your fish There are products that eliminate nitrates, the end result of the nitrogen cycle, but these products can only convert low levels, and if you've been testing nitrates, you know these levels have the potential to climb to high numbers. Nitrates should be removed by exchanging old tank water for fresh Easy goldfish care There are also products that eliminate algae, but most goldfish keepers do not understand that algae is a plant life that feeds on nitrates, keeping levels at bay. About Goldfish Emergency

By | 2020-08-05T05:59:11-05:00 March 17th, 2016|

About goldfish emergency and the owner author administrator About goldfish emergency. Would you like to know a little about me? I started keeping goldfish when my daughter stopped at the age of eleven. She'd been given two tiny fish for Christmas, and she had no interest. Someone gave me a quart sized antique fish bowl for the fish, and that's what started my goldfish journey almost twenty years ago Being on well water, the fish survived their daily water changes, and quickly outgrew their bowl. The next bowl held two gallons. The opening was really small, but the bowl was beautifully shaped. Soon after I moved to town, one of the fish died. The other began swimming into the glass, trying to get to her reflection. I raced to the pet shop, and came home with one tiny fantail fish, the only white fish swimming in a school of feeder comets. He was adorable, and it was love at first sight for both fish About goldfish emergency Goldfish emergency The pair lived for thirteen years. The first fish died from female issues, and her fellow died of a broken heart soon after During those first few years, my obsession began when I found the fantail laying upside down at the bottom of the tank. I gave him a salt bath, something I remembered reading. It worked. Within a few moments the fish was moving its fins and working its gills. He was alive I had been through several goldfish articles and websites, and although some of the information I found was helpful, none of the advice given was keeping my fish healthy. While the original pair seemed to survive my feeble attempts at goldfish keeping, one new fish after another died About goldfish I upgraded from a two gallon bowl to a thirty gallon hexagon shaped tank, and then to an eighty five gallon stock tank. After finding my fantail like that, I was determined to keep my fish alive and healthy, so I began researching the goldfish's native origin, the rivers of China. My thought was, if I could recreate the water conditions and quality, my fish would thrive just as their ancestors did, and it worked Here's a photo of my first stock tank. As you can see, I worked harder at making it attractive than making a healthy environment. Today, my tank has no plants other than algae, and no decorations. Just a terracotta drain tile for the fish to hide in and four pond pumps. View the video of my ecosystem 85 gallon stock tank It's all about the water our fish live in The Gibel carp thrives in water rich in minerals, cold and heavily oxygenated, and so do our goldfish. The Gibel carp swims in water that is fast moving, with strong currents. I knew what I had to do. Get that water moving, and expose the surface to fresh air. I buffered the mineral value and shot for the high end of the comfort zone with [...]
