Goldfish House Cleaning

Koi Goldfish house cleaning should be a part of our weekly maintenance

Just like the house you live in, your goldfish house gets cluttered and dirty over time. There’s more to goldfish house cleaning than a water change. Even though you regularly vacuum the gravel and exchange water, grunge builds up, hiding under the items in your aquarium or pond

When we vacuum our floors, the dust bunnies under the couch often go unnoticed, the gunk on top of the fridge forgotten and the ring around the tub left for another day. We all do it, and that’s okay. There are more important things than having a perfectly clean home, but we also know that when our house is dirty, it can effect our health, and the same is true with our goldfish

Make it a point to do a thorough cleaning in your fish house at least once a month. No, this doesn’t mean performing a 100% water change. It means lift those decorations and vacuum beneath them. If they’re hollow, rinse in steaming hot water to destroy any bad bacteria building up in the cavity; a favorite spot for bad bugs

The roots of plants, real or fake are another favorite location for bad bugs. Pull your plants from the gravel or from their container and give them a dip in salt water. Real plants harboring bad bugs will wither and die in a short time, which leads to an unhealthy environment

If you have pond pumps, lift the pump and gravel beneath it or move it a few inches

A clean fish house is a healthy fish house you’ve heard it said, but don’t over clean. Waste is the foundation of a natural ecosystem. One of the biggest mistakes goldfish keepers make is performing 100% water changes and cleaning their filters and pumps

If you drop a piece of a small piece of candy on the floor, even if I’ve just vacuumed, you can bet there’s a cat hair on it. I’m quite certain I have a hair ball in my stomach. I may start hacking them up soon. lol

to be honest the only hovering is one rung in the living room which my cat has made her lifes work to cover in her grey fur, the rest is floor boards I could sweep.

Who here vacuums their fish tank more than they do their house? lol I have to vacuum under my pumps every other day to keep nitrates at bay. Don’t ask me when the last time was that I vacuumed under my bed. Forget dust bunnies, I have dust buffalos under there!

1st tank I bought off a guy had 9 goldies in it and a few nautical ornaments. One was a 4inch maybe 5 inch high barrel say for wine or rum har har .It was hollow. When I finally decided to take it out and clean it up a bit …..it was fulll…of…. fish poop…..ohhhhhhh it was awful !!!! It hadn’t been touched since the 1st owner put it in there. GAG !!!
Don’t get me started on what swirled around when I started taking out surplus gravel as it was at least and inch thick on the bottom.

Clean houses are a folk tale in a house under the regime of a dictatorial 2 year old with the vocabulary of a 4 year old and a larger IQ than his parents. You think I’d be prouder… lol… I just want him to stop manipulating me!

Can we really ever have a clean house? Maybe if it was brand new, and everything going in it new as well. The more I clean (speaking of my house and the fish house as well) the more I see needs cleaning. I think your issue has more to do with Fishy than a dirty house

Timely article! I think this bloom I’m going through was brought on by the previous ones never fully clearing and a recent bout of not cleaning properly. With the new layout, I thought I was cleaning thoroughly enough. Nope.
